AUSTRALIAN SHEPERDS about the breed
You can come to our kennel you are cordially invited to see our dogs and puppies, If the babies are at least 7 weeks (by appointment only please, that way you don't miss us). We ask that if you are planning to visit more than one kennel on the same day, that you visit us first. No one that has been to another kennel on the same day will be allowed to see our puppies for safety sake, unless you take a "bleach" bath first. :-)
Puppy Buyer Requirements:
There are many web sites on the Internet that offer excellent information on the breed. There are also several books available (check www.amazon.com)
Buyers need a fenced yard that is secure and an area where your Aussie can get adequate exercise.
We encourage our buyers to invest the time to take your puppy to obedience classes. This helps ensure that your dog learns the rules of being a family member.
We ask that our buyers keep in contact with us. We love updates on how our puppies/dogs have grown up. We encourage you to call us if you ever have questions about your dog or it's family history. This also helps us in our breeding program.
Our puppies are released on an individual basis depending on how they are doing, their litter size, when they start to eat on their own, and lastly how they react to their puppy shots. Generally, puppies go home between 8 to 10 weeks. This is only if the puppy is completely ready to go and the environment where the puppy is going is a safe and secure one. Occasionally we have an older puppy available due to someone changing their mind as to color, pattern, quality or sex. These puppies usually have a better defined temperament and still adjust very well to new environments.
Vaccinations:
Our puppies receive a minimum of two shots prior to going home. Vaccine - We give shots at 8, 12 and 16 weeks. If a puppy goes home at 8 weeks we still recommend it get another shot at 12 weeks and 16 weeks. After a pup is a year old, it requires an annual booster. Our puppies are wormed prior to going home. We worm all puppies with pyrantel at 2,4,6 and 71/2 weeks.
Health Guarantee:
We guarantee all puppies to be healthy when they leave our kennel. If you receive a puppy from us and an health problem develops within 48 hours, you must contact us regarding the problem. We cannot be responsible for veterinary costs not approved prior to treatment. If your puppy should die within 7 days of leaving our kennel due to Parvo or Distemper (autopsy report required), we will replace it with a like quality puppy. Any puppy which dies due to a genetic defect within 12 months after purchase will be replaced free of charge (except shipping, health certificate and handling fee). This will be done if your veterinarian attributes death to a genetic deformity in an autopsy and sends the findings of the autopsy to us. The autopsy shall be at the owners expense.
All parents of our puppies are in superb health. We OFA certify all our dogs at 24 months of age. On occasion, if a male is bred prior to 24 months, the x-rayed hips are evaluated by our Veterinarian and myself to ensure there is no sign of hip dysphasia. All our dogs have their eyes cleared, free of eye defects, by a certified ophthalmologist annually.
Puppies / pet-$800.00 - $1500.00 Show/ Breeding Quality Adults - $1200.00 & up -- I will never sell any dogs for breeding only.Care, expertise, time and effort go into the raising of Cuttingacres Aussies and we would be most grateful if requests were not made for "discounted" pricing. Shipping - A puppy we prefer to ship about 9 to 10 weeks of age.
Something also to consider..........every case of air shipping causes some form of shipping stress. Generally there are just a few days of adjustment, possibly a mild case of sniffles, sometimes diarrhea. All puppies that are shipped are health certified prior to being shipped.
Flights: We try for the best possible flight for each pup. Non stop flights are our first choice. This sometimes puts us on the road 1 or 2 a.m. but that is all right with us.
Shipping Charges Paid by Customer:

Australian Shepherd breed characteristics and temperament
TEMPERAMENT
The Australian Shepherd is an intelligent, medium-sized dog of strong herding and guardian instincts. He is also a delightful and loyal companion and a great family dog. He loves to be part of the daily hustle and bustle, and enjoys riding in the vehicle just to be with his beloved master. As a farm dog, he diligently carries out his responsibilities, be they bringing in the stock or finding that stray one that got tangled in the brush. He is easy to train, easy to housebreak, and eager to please.
Aussies have been used as seeing-eye dogs, as utility dogs to the physically handicapped, hearing aid dogs, police and narcotics dogs and search and rescue dogs. In the northern areas they have also been used as sled dogs. Many go with their masters as volunteers to children's homes and nursing homes to do therapy work. Truly, the Australian Shepherd is a highly versatile dog.
The Aussie (as he is lovingly nicknamed) is a very active dog that needs a great deal of exercise on a daily basis to prevent him from become bored or frustrated and developing destructive habits. Because of their high energy level, combined with high intelligence, Aussies need to be given a "job" to perform, be it shepherding the children, protecting the house, herding livestock or competing in dog events.
One of the most frequent reasons Aussies are turned over to rescue groups is because their owners didn't realize how much energy the breed has, and weren't willing to channel that energy through training. Aussies are also quite demanding of their owners' time and attention and want to be constantly with them, following them from room to room in the house, and going along in the car or truck on errands. They can be highly territorial and protective of their masters' possessions, which can cause serious difficulties unless controlled with proper training.
COLORS
The Australian Shepherd comes in four acceptable colors: black, blue merle (a marbling of gray and black), red (ranging from light cinnamon to liver), and red merle (marbling of red and silver or buff). A variety of white and tan markings may appear on the face, chest, front and rear legs. The outer coat is of moderate length, with a texture that is straight to wavy and weather resistant. The undercoat is soft and dense, and the amount varies with climate. Tails are naturally bobbed or docked. Ears are moderately sized, and break forward and over, or the side as rose ears. Males weigh approximately 50 to 65 pounds, measuring from 20 to 23 inches, and females weigh about 40 to 55 pounds, measuring from 18 to 21 inches.
The eyes of the Australian Shepherd are perhaps one of his most commented on features because of the variety of colors. They may be any color or combination of colors from glassy blue, amber, hazel, to all shades of brown.
BREED HISTORY
While there are many theories as to the origin of the Australian Shepherd, the breed as we know it today developed exclusively in the United States. The Australian Shepherd was given its name because of their association with the Basque sheepherders who came to the United States from Australia in the 1800's. The Aussie rose rapidly in popularity with the boom of western riding after World War II, becoming known to the general public via rodeos, horse shows, movies and television. Their inherent versatility and trainability made them useful on American farms and ranches. The American stockmen continued the development of the breed, maintaining the versatility, keen intelligence, strong herding instinct and eye-catching appearance.
Australian Shepherds have been registered by various registries since the early 1950's. In 1990, the United States Australian Shepherd Association was established as the parent club of the Australian Shepherd representing the breed to the American Kennel Club. On September 1, 1991, the AKC recognized the Australian Shepherd breed and on January 1, 1993, accepted them into the Herding Group.
